Michael Laurie
Michael Laurie is the owner of Watershed LLC and a sustainability consultant specializing in indoor and outdoor water efficiency, landscape, stormwater, and energy efficiency work. He has over 25 years of experience in sustainability and conservation workHe has worked on both indoor and outdoor resource efficiency projects at a wide variety of sites including hospitals, hotels, schools, offices, industrial facilities, and homes in Washington State as well as 22 states and two countries. He has carried out over a thousand water efficiency, energy efficiency and sustainability consultations and assessments. He has begun work on a contract to help the city of Bellingham design and implement a water conservation program with trainings of staff and presentations and audits for commercial and residential customers. He is carrying out landscape irrigation audits for customers of the Cascade Water Alliance for the 5th year. He is beginning a new contract carrying out landscape irrigation audits for several properties of Tacoma Public Utilities. In the last 5 years Mr. Laurie has achieved a cumulative total of over $3.5 million/year in cost effective water, wastewater, stormwater, and energy savings for his clients with indoor and outdoor water efficiency projects. He is currently working with two builders/developers helping them include sustainability features in their commercial and residential projects which meet their financial payback needs and the ecological characteristics of the sites. He is also now working as a verifier on three Built Green projects including a remodel of 38 multi-family buildings. Mr Laurie designed and installed five drip irrigation systems in the last year and is currently designing and installing a rain garden for a homeowner on Vashon. He has completed 3 rainwater system designs and is currently designing three rainwater collection systems for commercial and residential buildings and has completed over 200 commercial and residential landscape irrigation assessments in the last few years. In the last two years. he has given over 30 presentations and classes on water related sustainability topics for a wide range of audiences including builders, developers, architects, engineers, utility staff, real estate agents, and homeowners. He has been a teacher and curriculum developer in the Sustainable Building Advisor (SBA) program since it’s inception in 1999. The SBA program is recognized as one of the premier sustainable building training programs in the country. Mr. Laurie is also currently a teacher in the SBA program in Seattle, Spokane, Bellingham, and Poulsbo. He is currently chair of the Vashon Groundwater Protection Committee where he has been a member for 5 years and helped write a Watershed Protection Plan for Vashon Island. He was on the board of the Vashon Heights Water Utility for 2 years and is currently leading the Vashon Master Gardeners in their work to create a native plant demonstration garden at Vashon Island High School. At his home on Vashon Island Mr. Laurie has designed and installed a wide range of resource efficiency and restoration projects including a green roof, a rain garden, a compost toilet, 1,000 gallons of rainwater storage and use, drip irrigation, pesticide free landscaping, invasive plant removal, and resource efficient appliances. He is certified as a Building Analyst Professional, Water Conservation Practitioner, Landscape Irrigation Auditor, Site Water Planner, LEED Accredited Professional, Built Green Verifier, Master Gardener, Master Composter, Rainwater Catchment Systems Accredited Professional, and Washington Department of Ecology Erosion and Sediment Control Lead. He has a BS in Environmental Science from Western Washington University, an Associate of Technical Arts in Energy Management from Edmonds Community College, and a Masters in Business Administration from Seattle University. He has taken over 40 classes on a variety of water subjects. |
